Labour news from UNI global union - for trade unions in a global services economy. -

Rolf Büttner Europe’s postal workers will be on their way to Berlin at the end of May to protest at moves to take away protection from European postal systems.
Total de-regulation is proposed by the European Commission from 1 January, 2009 but without any specific measures to fund the universal postal service that guarantees citizens delivery and collection wherever they live and at a fixed price.
“It will mean the postal service in Europe will get worse and jobs are at risk,” UNI Postal President Rolf Büttner told the UNI-Europa Conference in Athens, Greece. “That’s why we say No to the new directive.”
On May 30 in Berlin postal workers and their unions will march to protest - Germany holds the current presidency of the European Union.
Experience of changes in the Dutch postal operator showed that 7,000 jobs went. “We have to stand up against these changes which are based on social dumping and wage dumping.”
The UNI-Europa Postal campaign has already won support from the Social Affairs and Regional Development Committees of the European Parliament.
“We have to switch from lobbying to action. We have to take our resistance out onto the streets and into the companies.”
Later this week the future of Europe’s postal system will be a key topic at the UNI Postal World Conference, also being held in Athens.
“We stand beside our postal colleagues in their struggle to save the universal postal service and public services generally,” said UNI-Europa Secretary Bernadette Ségol.
